A small room shouldn’t lack in style for that simple reason. You can decorate a small room in plenty of ways that will make it look stylish while keeping the room functional in terms of storage space. Paint an Accent Wall
Try using one of the walls as an accent wall by painting it in a bold color. Not only does this make the room appear larger but it also gives it a stylish feel. Make sure that the other walls are painted in a complimentary color so that the single bold wall doesn’t seem out of place.
However, you should stay away from dark colors. If the accent wall is going to be painted in a bold color you shouldn’t choose black, dark blue, red or dark green. Instead a color like pink, yellow or aquamarine will work perfectly. You only make the area look much smaller when you paint it in dark colors.
Choose Furniture that Fits the Size of Your Room
Furniture should be in scale. In other words, if your room is small your bed isn’t going to be something huge. The family room follows the same rules. The pieces you find should well in the room without dominating the area it is placed in. Walking comfortably without having to bump into all your furniture is something that you will definitely want.
Find Furniture that Works as Storage, Too
You should also look for pieces that can pull double duty, especially when working with a small room. Wooden chests and similar pieces are great for pulling double duty as they can be used like a coffee table or side table and can also be used as storage for other items in the room. This way you will be able to sneak in more storage space and you will have more room in a small area.
You should be sure to use as much vertical space as you possibly can. So much more storage are and design space can be added when you maximize the height of your walls. You can get a great vertical storage space out of pieces such as bookshelves and armoires.
Another great idea is shelving that is attached to the wall. Design and functional space would be the functions of the shelving. You can add some style to the room by simply placing some of your books and knickknacks in an interesting manner on the shelves.
Let in Some Light to Open Up a Room
Your room should get as much natural light as possible. With natural light your room will look brighter and bigger. Keep your window treatments simple with something like a pair of plain drapes or blinds. Adding mirrors to the walls will reflect light in the room and make it look even larger.
Choose Lighting that Doesn’t Overwhelm the Space
If the lighting fixtures hang or are very large you should avoid them. Without having to take up much space and keeping the room well lit, track lighting is a great idea to go with.
Decorating a small space shouldn’t necessarily be hard and boring. If you keep things simple and functional while adding small aspect of your style to the room, you will begin to really enjoy your small space as much as possible.
