Interior Design is predominantly concerned with the decoration, color, and materials use in the creation of living and working spaces. This is different from contractors who are generally concerned with implementing ideas from a functional standpoint. Interior Design is studied in close relationship to art and architecture. Interior design is an excellent major for students with strong creative and analytical skills who are self-motivated and work well in teams. This program prepares students for careers in areas such as office design, retail, healthcare, residential and hospitality design.
Interior Design is an immensely rewarding profession. In addition, the profession has become a field that is legally recognized in, to date, 25 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 8 Canadian provinces, requiring that interior designers have a Council for Interior Design Accreditation (formerly Foundation for Interior Design Education Research [FIDER]) -accredited degree, as well as two years work experience and passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination in order to work on certain projects. Interior Design is based on solving problems to improve the quality of people’s physical environment. The professional interior designer plans and creates interior spaces that enclose and serve human needs in relation to physical, functional, social, psychological, and aesthetic elements. Interior design is thriving and full of opportunities in 2010.
Decorating with interior design follows three principles. First, a successfully designed room should be functional. Decorative concrete can be finished to create any number of modern effects. Floors, countertops, and furniture are great places for concrete installations that will really show off your decorative chops.
Professional organizations are significant in this field, and many interior designers find it helpful to join one or more of them. To become eligible for membership, one must have completed two to three years of graduate work, worked in the field for two to three years, and passed the federal licensing exam. Professional and creative skills are developed across: branding, professional practice, contract law, health and safety, architectural diagramming and project management. The culmination of the year will be a unique self-directed Major Project, which will be exhibited to the public.
Residential interior design is a comprehensive understanding of how architectural space can be used for residential purposes. Before you ever think about home décor, a residential interior designer can ask you about your dream home and your lifestyle and consult on a home plan, including room dimensions and shapes. Residential space planners share the same body of knowledge of building and safety codes when working on remodeling or new construction projects.
Architecture, interior architecture and interior design are now subsets together with graphic, industrial, landscape design, and so on/of an activity focused to solving problems for individuals and their collective societies to house, enhance, and prepare for a better future. Architectural and interior design firms display graphics and models from recent projects and share insights with students through informal presentations. Senior shows provide an opportunity for soon to be professionals to share their work and inspire other students.
